There are no words to describe the sorrow and pain we feel on the passing of our precious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. So many have been waiting for her, with the first in line being her loving husband, Hughie.
Mary was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (White) and Charles Gouthro of North Sydney. Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Agnes Egan; her brothers, John, Art, Fred, Arnold, and Jerry; her parents-in-law, William and Mary Nicholson; her brother-in-law, William; and her daughter-in-law, Debbie.
Mary is survived by her three children, Anita, Eric (Connie), and Elizabeth (Herb); her cherished grandchildren, Ian, Krista, Justin, and Jesse; and her beloved great-grandchildren, June, Jude, Prudence, and Rylee.
She was blessed with many dear friends throughout her life. A very special mention goes to Anita Farrell, Sarah Ann Fahey, and John and Patti Fukala. She loved all her nieces and nephews, as well as her Grannon Road cousins and friends—affectionately known as “the rock throwers.”
Born in North Sydney, Mary married Hugie in 1950. When Hughie joined the Army, they left Nova Scotia and lived on several army bases over the years. After 40 years, they retired home to Cape Breton, settling in Sydney Mines in 1997.
Mary was a devoted Catholic who served her church faithfully. She was a Eucharistic Minister, brought Communion to the sick, took up collections, and was an active member of the prayer group and CWL. She joyfully made her Cursillo.
One could never speak of Mary without mentioning her love of bingo and her dear bingo buddies, Betty Laffin and Sarah Ann Fahey.
Many beloved “furbabies” went before Mary, and we know she will rejoice in seeing them all again.
A special and heartfelt thank you to everyone who cared for Mary in her final months. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Virick, Wanda and Justin Lovell, Ann Marie Stewart, Joanne Morrison, and Heather Connolly for their compassion and dedication. Sincere thanks as well to the North Side Homemakers, the VON, and Palliative Care for their kindness and support, which meant so much to Mary and our family. We also extend our gratitude to Peter Doyle for being with us in our time of need.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, on March 7, 2026, at 11 a.m., with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. The family will welcome all to a luncheon following the Mass at the Royal Canadian Legion, North Sydney. Funeral arrangements are under the care of JM Jobes Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, and if you so choose, donations may be made in Mary’s name to the Cape Breton SPCA.
“With a smile that lit up a room, she now lights up heaven.”
