Darren Peter Hopkins

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Darren Peter Hopkins. Darren passed away peacefully in the palliative care unit at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, on February 19th 2026.  

Born on April 4th, 1965 in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton. Darren was the beloved son of Pat Hopkins and the late Peter Hopkins. He was the husband of Debbie Hopkins (Martell) and a proud father to his sons, Matthew and Nick, who meant the world to him. He was a dear brother to Brent Hopkins, Carol Confiant (Farrell), Arlene Smith (Jimmy), Bruce Hopkins (Hilary), Wayne Hopkins (Lisa), Wanda Macneil (Lewis), and Doug Hopkins (Frances). He was predeceased by his father Peter Hopkins, by his brother Doug Hopkins and his sister Wanda MacNeil. 

Darren grew up in Cape Breton and attended Memorial High School. He later worked for the Royal Bank, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic. Outside of work, Darren had a deep love for music, sharing a laugh and his pet cats, passions that brought him comfort and joy throughout his life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 16th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 142, 50 Hillcrest Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A Roman Catholic Church service & reception will take place on April 18th at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Parish Church, 905 Main Street, Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. Followed by burial in Sydney Mines at a later date, where Darren will be laid to rest alongside his father and his brother Doug.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Darren’s close friends Darlene Given (Brown), Kevin & Tonya Kelloway, as well as the compassionate staff of the Victoria General Palliative Care Unit in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for their care and support.

Darren will be remembered for his sense of humour, kindness, his quiet strength, and the love and many laughs he shared with family and friends. The family wishes to thank everyone for their support and kindness during this difficult time.
