Colleen Finlayson Obituary

With profound sadness, we share the unexpected passing of Colleen Marie Finlayson, age 62, on February 10, 2026, at her home. Born in Sydney Mines on March 6, 1963, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah “Jane” (MacDonald) Finlayson.

Colleen possessed a truly unique sense of humour and a deep love of laughter. Time spent with her meant belly laughs, quick wit, and stories told in a way only she could deliver. Her humour was unmistakably her own; being in her presence simply felt like home.

After high school, Colleen ventured west with her lifelong partner, Gary, by her side, embracing adventure and new beginnings. Yet the pull of home was strong, and she ultimately returned to Nova Scotia, settling in Halifax, where her heart truly belonged.

Their Halifax home was warm and welcoming. Colleen created a space that was unmistakably her own — filled with an abundance of meticulously cared-for plants (she could never have too many), the soft glow of candles, and often the sweet sounds of Van Morrison playing in the background. It was a cozy haven where everyone felt at ease the moment they walked through the door.

She worked for many years as a culinary professional sailing the Great Lakes and spoke fondly of her time aboard the Chi-Cheemaun ferry in Ontario. Her later position with Marine Atlantic, along with her deep desire to be close to family, brought her home for good.

Colleen was a kind and generous soul with a true heart of gold. She loved to cook and took great joy in feeding others, making certain no one ever left her home hungry. She never wished to be fussed over — insisting, “You sit,” as she anticipated her guests’ needs before they were even spoken. She wore her heart on her sleeve and was a fierce defender of those she loved.

Though she faced health challenges in recent years, Colleen continued to put her own needs aside to assist, comfort, and counsel others. Her kindness and generosity remained ever-present, even during her most difficult days. That her passing came in February — the month of the heart — feels a fitting and poignant reflection of the love that defined her life.

Colleen’s strength and unwavering love will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her.

We hope you are having a beautiful “Moondance,” dear heart — pain-free and reunited with your beloved mother and father.

She is survived by her life partner of 47 years, Gary MacKinnon; her brother, Walter; her sisters, Paula (Basil) and Tania (Sean); her sisters-in-law, Donna and Dena (Ian); her brother-in-law, Troy; her nieces, Justine, Abbe, Lucy, Marianne, and Bretony; her nephew, Sam; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Colleen was predeceased by her loving parents, Thomas and Jane Finlayson; her grandparents, Ray Dillman and Veronica Finlayson, and Bob and Mae MacDonald; her in-laws, Chuck and Rose MacKinnon; her sister-in-law, Colleen MacKinnon; her brother-in-law, Derrick Aubrecht; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cherished cousins who held a special place in her heart.

In accordance with Colleen’s wishes, there will be no visitation or public service. Though she may be gone from our sight, the warmth of her laughter, the comfort of her home, and the boundless love she gave so freely will remain with us always — a lasting light in the hearts of all who loved her.
