Allan MacDougall Obituary

We, the family, announce with deep love and sadness the passing of Allan Joseph MacDougall, age 72, on February 6, 2026, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, having navigated four years living with cancer.

Born in North Sydney, September 19, 1953, Allan was the youngest child of the late Stephen and Agnes (MacNeil) MacDougall. He began his quest for knowledge earning a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education from St. Francis Xavier University after high school, followed by a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alberta.

His full-time teaching career began in Leduc, Alberta and continued after moving home to Nova Scotia at St. Francis Xavier University, Cole Harbour and Musquodoboit Harbour High Schools before returning home to his beloved Cape Breton. Here he accepted a position as an instructor at Nova Scotia Community College, Marconi Campus, where he taught until his retirement in 2018. Allan was a passionate and proud educator, and never tired of telling anyone who would listen, how much he loved working with his colleagues at NSCC. His compassion and commitment to the many students he taught over the years was a source of pride for his family.

Allan is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Debbie (MacLean) MacDougall; his devoted sons Mark MacDougall (Hillary Capstick), Jesse MacDougall (Caelin Murray), and Kevin MacDougall; his brother Hughie (Velma); and sisters Kathleen (Barry) Muller and Josephine (Lennie) Shaw.

He is also survived by his many brothers- and sisters-in-law: Francine MacDougall; Ben (Carmie), Neil (Gale), Lauchie (Sharon), Peter, Sharon, Shane (Barb), Pius (Caroline), Terry, and Paul (Caroline) MacLean; Adele (Seamus) Britton; Craig Reid; Earl McInnis; Greg Young; Emmanuel Taylor, a multitude of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins, whom he made time for and enjoyed immensely the variety of connections shared.

Besides his parents, Allan was predeceased by his brothers Donnie and Eddie; sisters-in-law Myrtle MacDougall, Jackie Reid, Sheila McInnis, Marlene MacLean, Betty Young, and Helen Taylor; brother-in-law Francis MacLean; nephew Stevie MacDougall, nieces Sarah Catherine "Alex" MacLean, and Emma Taylor.

Allan lived a life of curiosity and adventure. He was involved with Air Cadets in North Sydney as a student, volunteered as a Scouts Canada leader, Search and Rescue responder and served on the Board of Directors of the Northside Community Pool from it’s inception until his illness.  For over 40 summers he was a proud resident of Washabuck, where he was a founding member and  consistent participant of the Tour de Washabuck annual family 26 km bike race (missing only one race until his illness) also a dedicated and decorated participant in the yearly Washabuck Shootout, These events reflected so much of who Allan was—his love of the outdoors, health and fitness, and his exceptional skill as a marksman. He proudly held the esteemed designation of Master Fire Stoker selecting only the most promising as possible apprentices.

Allan’s talents and interests were many and varied. He learned a variety of skills that made him adept at building and household repairs which though completed with competence were nonetheless his least favourite use of his time. He held a deep interest in  traveling, hunting, history, science, snowboarding, boating and water skiing. He frequently hiked many areas of the island, with particular love for the Cape Breton Highlands. Allan patiently spent a lifetime perfecting his swimming technique, both in the pool and in the Bras d’Or, sharing his knowledge in a learn to swim program for adult Washabuck residents.

He will be remembered for his sharp mind, humour and and love of place. He leaves behind a legacy of learning, adventure and a love of the outdoors that is ingrained in his beloved sons and  continues to live on through ‘his boys’.

Our family is sincerely grateful to Dr. Peter Poulos, the staff at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, and the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for going above and beyond to support Allan over the past four years. Their exceptional care, compassion, and kindness made his illness so much easier to navigate. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Diane MacLachlan. Words cannot express our appreciation or the esteem in which you are held by our family. Your dedication, guidance, and unwavering compassion brought comfort not only to Allan, but to all of us during a very difficult journey, and we will be forever grateful.
